Vajradhara represents the original, primordial Buddha, the one absolute power which creates itself, with no beginning and no end. This depiction represents a fundamental concept of Buddhism, the union of the male representing compassion with the female representing wisdom, this marriage leading to enlightenment. Vajradhara is seated in a meditation pose wearing a crown on his head. He holds a thunderbolt (Vajra) in his right hand representing the male aspect of skillful means and method. In his left hand, he holds a bell (Ghanta) representing the female aspect of supreme wisdom, the two together symbolizes the unison of the male and female aspects which leads to liberation and enlightenment. Shakti holds a ritual curved knife (Kartika) in her right hand symbolizing the severance of ignorance and all material and worldly things. In her left hand she holds a skull cup (Kapala), used in tantric rituals for offering sacrificial meat or blood to protective deities. | | | Features: | |

Tantra is not a religion in and of itself, but is a collection of practices designed to awaken the spiritual within the mundane through physical expression, thus leading to Enlightenment. Yoga and Shikantaza in the lotus posture have been identified as tantric practices. There are numerous others. In the West, tantric practice is almost always (narrowly and wrongly) identified strictly with sex.
Tantric sexual practices are meant to awaken the participants spiritually and bring them to Nirvana through the physical doorway of this most intimate and wonderful human medium. The classic tantric sexual position is yab-yum (literally "man and woman") in which each partner represents one half of the Yin and Yang balance. The male embodies compassion. The female embodies wisdom. Together, they create the world.
Tantric practice in one form or another has been adopted by most of the religions of the Indian subcontinent. In Hindu practice, the gods Shiva and Shakti are shown in embrace, while in Buddhist tantrism, Shiva is replaced by the Buddha Shakyamuni, as in this lovely faux stone figurine, a subtle expression of the joy partners hopefully find in one another.
